Williamsburg, Va. - William & Mary jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening minutes of Thursday night's game in Williamsburg, but the Dragons responded immediately with a 12-6 run that gave the visitors a one-point advantage, 17-16, midway through the period. From there the Tribe (14-7, 6-4 CAA) would launch into a 26-5 run to close out the half and, effectively, dispatch the Dragons (5-16, 0-10 CAA) in a 75-50 loss.
Gabriela Marginean led all scorers with 19 points and Narissa Suber inched closer to the 1,000-point career milestone with eight points. The junior guard needs just 13 more to hit the millennium mark. Kyra Kaylor paced the Tribe with 18 points and Devin James compiled a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Dragons gave themselves a chance in the early going by hanging around despite the scoring efforts of Kaylor. The reigning CAA Player of the Year scored 10 points in the first seven minutes of the contest. But, to the Dragons' benefit, she also collected her second foul of the contest before her eighth minute of play, sending her to the bench for the duration. Unfortunately for the Dragons, Tiffany Benson and Devin James picked up the slack, combining to score 14 points after Kaylor's departure during William & Mary's 26-point spurt.
In the second period the Tribe did just enough to maintain its commanding advantage. Despite clanking to 26 percent shooting in the second half, William & Mary did not allow Drexel to get any closer than 20 points for the duration. The Dragons held the home team to just seven field goals in the period on 26 attempts but the Tribe got to the line 23 times in the half and converted 14 of the free tosses. William & Mary also held a decisive advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Dragons 42-24.
Drexel returns to the DAC on Feb. 4 to take on UNC Wilmington in a game that will be televised regionally on Comcast SportsNet. Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
